Best Coffee Grinder Contest. Why Burr Beats Blade

What’s the best coffee grinder for great tasting coffee and will it cost me an arm and a leg? What’s wrong with what I’ve got now?

If you already have a coffee grinder and you want the best tasting coffee you may want to consider a burr machine.

Experts agree that the burr grinder gives your coffee a better flavor. It grinds with a lower heat than the more conventional blade that most of us are familiar with and it’s a little more expensive than blade grinders.

The blade grinders are not really grinders they really are just choppers as the blades whirl around chopping the beans until they are grinds. It’s often difficult to get the right grind as you may chop the beans too finely for your coffee maker.

This is especially a problem with espresso machines which can clog up and with your French Press which can be hard to press down if the beans are chopped too fine.

In addition, the higher heat in the blade grinder can “burn” the beans and create a less than optimal brew.

So if you are already grinding your beans just ahead of making your coffee you may want to try to squeeze out a little more taste with a burr grinder.

The burr grinder will crush the bean between a stationary plate and a moving grinding wheel. This gives a more reliable consistency to the size of the ground bean.

Burrs come in two types – wheel burr and conical burr.

Wheels are less expensive and can be quite noisy and more messy than the best grinders the conical burr. Slower spinning burrs make them much quieter than the wheel burr and also less messy. Of course with most things that are the best – they also cost the most!

Braun grinders get good reviews from experts and consumers and they make both blade and burr grinders.

A Cadillac quality Burr Grinder is the Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder but it can make the perfect grind every time without "burning" your beans. So like most of us if you can't have a Caddy in the driveway - you can have one in your kitchen.
