Coffee Burr Grinder
Coffee burr grinder? What the heck is it and is it any good?
Well when I first heard about this particular grinder I had been a coffee drinker for many years – more than I want to admit in print and was intrigued by what was described to me as the best thing for coffee aficionados since sliced bread. So I went down to my local discount appliance store and popped down 100 big ones for a
Cuisinart conical burr grinder.
Was I happy with it? You bet I was! There’s a lot of scientific reasons for this grinder being better than my old blade grinder. Basically it’s something to do with the essential oils of the coffee being destroyed when the spinning blade creates massive heat when it blasts the beans to smithereens as opposed to the low temperatures with the burr which more gently grinds the coffee. Makes sense – after all it is supposed to be a grinder not a smasher of the bean. Anyhow the result- the arbitrator of taste in our home (my wife) after initial sticker shock at the cost of my new grinder pronounced the first cup out of my

“as good as Starbucks”. High praise indeed from one who was just complaining about my spendthrift habits! She also initially was skeptical about

which she now loves! Ah domestic bliss!
The new grinder is neat in other ways. It has a container on the top of the machine for a half pound of beans, it automatically grinds the exact quantity of bean per cup and it can be adjusted for French Press, drip and espresso and it doesn’t make a mess and is not as noisy as the old grinder. All in all I give it two thumbs up!
