Gold Coffee Filter

Gold Coffee Filter Versus Paper - Which is Better?

Many years ago we got a gold filter with our Braun Coffee Maker.

I always treasured it until I reviewed the Melitta coffee filter. I am very familiar with Melitta and first used them with their manual one cup system when I was a student using it to filter the coffee right into my cup.

Now Melitta claims that the gold doesn’t do as good a job – even to the point of saying that not only does their paper micro pores filter takes out more bitter oils but also that they filter out cholesterol raising substances.

But one thing is true.

The gold is still in service after many, many years and doesn’t cost me a cent to replace.

Paper filters have to be bought and the costs can add up if you are on a budget. In the long run though they can cost anywhere from five dollars to twenty five dollars initially.

To compound the problems gold filter users claim that their coffee now tastes better because they don’t filter out those oils that Melitta claims to trap in their filter.

Personally, I think Melitta tastes better but the difference is pretty minimal.

And what happens when you want a cup of coffee and you’ve run out of filters.

Like me, you may have in desperation tried a paper napkin or paper towel as a filter. Doesn’t work as well does it?

I understand that Melitta Benz the inventor of the filter drip system first used her son’s ink blotter paper but that’s pretty well obsolete. I mean where you find blotter paper these days.

Maybe if you are a filter dripper you get a pack of filters and a gold permanent one so when you run out you don’t have to go hunting for that blotter paper..
