Juan is a well known spokesman for Columbian coffee. There really is not Juan as he was an actor who represented the National Federation of Columbian Coffee Growers since the late 1950s. The Federation is owned by over 500,000 Columbian coffee farmers. Juan’s mule Cochita appears with him usually doing the hard work of carry coffee bags in from the field. Juan was employed to enhance the reputation of Columbian coffee and hence the sales. Did he do a good job? The actor Carlos Sanchez who played Juan for over 40 years retired at 71 in 2006 as did Conchita. But never fear – a new Juan was selected - Carlos Castañeda, a grower from the town of Andes to carry on the tradition. There were 400 actors competing for the job and Carlos was selected from 10 finalists. Juan spawned an international chain of coffee shops which sells only 100% Columbian coffee as well as Juans famous beans.
