Single Cup Coffee Makers - Friend or Foe!

Best single cup coffee makers? Keurig K-Cup, Tassimo, Senseo? The latest craze to hit the staid old coffee maker industry and by all reports there flying out the door of retailers.

But the crucial question? Do they make a great cup of coffee?A little background to start. There are 3 types of these brewers that have entered a fierce competition for top spot.

Here’s the lineup

Tassimo – which uses T-Discs that you insert into the machine. The T-Disc has a bar code that the machine reads so that the correct amount of water at the correct temperature is used for each type of brew. This is important because a T-Disc makes all kind of different hot beverages.

Not having a T-Disc, I was a little baffled when my wife brought home a package of these little discs complete with some packages of cream. Unfortunately you can only use the T-Discs in a Tassimo.

Coffee Pod Brewers - which use coffee pods.

I first used this in a hotel room in the Bahamas and it made a very tasty cup of coffee compared to the run of the mill hotel coffee maker.

Even Starbucks now makes Pods.

Keurig K-Cup is the King of 1 cup coffee makers in my home and it seems to be the choice of experts and many other consumers. They use K-cups only. Some people erroneously call them Kuerig coffee pots but that's wrong because there's no pot - the brewed coffee flows right into your cup. Yes! That's one of the advantages of alss these single cup coffee makers.
So what’s the down and dirty about these 1 cup wonders.Well all of them are easy to use; you buy the cups, discs or pods and put them into your machine, and start them up.

There all fast – you’ve got a cup within 60 seconds or so and no mess or fuss with filters because they don’t have conventional filters. There are built into the pod or cup.

So fast, easy and pretty good coffee is the result of all three.

The cons. Well the pods or cups are more expensive buying coffee and grinding it and you won’t be able to get as many types of coffee. But save that exotic blend for your French Press. For fast easy coffee, if your budget permits, one of these may be just the ticket for you!
