Tips to Make Espresso – One Great Way to Make Coffee!

Consider these tips to make espresso and impress your friends or just find out how to make a great cup?

Here’s how to make a unique blend of java that tastes great and has less volume than a regular cup of coffee. Depending on how many shots you drink there may even be less caffeine in espresso

Good for those long drives to work!

So what is an espresso anyway?

Espresso requires an espresso machine which forces the hot water through the ground beans at high pressure. The pressure is created within the machine by steam or an internal pump rather than the old fashioned lever espresso machines where a lever was pulled down by hand creating pressure which was forced hot water through the grounds.

This is why baristas talk about pulling a shot.

So the first thing an aspiring home barista has to do is purchase a good quality espresso maker.

Start by cleaning the coffee pod ensuring that no old grinds or coffee residue remain. Don’t use soap and water as it will get into your next brew and who needs a soapy taste.

Grind your beans preferably using a quality burr grinder rather than the more conventional blade grinder.

Put 7 grams or about a quarter ounce of ground coffee into the filter basket and tamp it down evenly with a hand tamper. In a pinch, you can just use a spoon. Don’t pack them too tightly or the water won’t be able to get through. A slight twist may prevent the coffee from sticking to the bottom of your tamper which can cause an uneven flow of water through the grounds.

Assemble the unit with the shot holder in place and turn on the machine. The flow will be dark at first and taper off to a lighter color. Your 7 grams of ground beans should produce about 1 to 1 and half ounces of espresso. So once you have reached this point take away your espresso cup and drink.

If you prefer, you can also make cappuccino or café au lait by adding steamed milk or add hot water for an Americano. Italians often add whipped cream to the final product and call it espresso con panna.
