What is cappuccino?

What is cappuccino? Some say a small slice of heaven.

Traditionally made from espresso, hot milk and milk foam and served in a porcelain cup to keep it “piping hot” as my wife would put it – it can be a little slice of heaven in a cup for a morning wake up or just enjoyed with crusty Italian bread if you are hungry or a biscotti if you are more tradional.

It’s an Italian drink but North Americans and in fact people all over the world have taken to it with mucho gusto.

It's got a relatively short history as has espresso which was invented in the early 1900s in Italy.

The Italians enjoy it at breakfast but my wife loves hers as a break from her busy work day. She go to the local coffee shop and have one with a biscotti or just on its own.

In other countries they serve it as an after dinner drink.

Here in North America we even serve it frozen!

The frothy milk foam and porcelain cup keep it warm so don’t settle for a Styrofoam cup.

We also make it at home with some pretty simple ingredients some pretty simple ingredients and using our espresso maker.

First, I make the espresso after grinding the beans with my conical burr coffee grinder – so that they are ground to perfection – well at least to my standard of perfection. The burr has 6 different grind settings for espresso.

We steam the milk to the desired temperature and amount and serve it up nice and foamy.

They call it Cappuccino after the Capuchin friars brown habits and shaved heads – brown on bottom and white on top or so the legend goes.

Whatever the truth – there is not many things as satisfying as drinking one with a nice biscotti. Yummy!
